The Local Church

My Wandering Days

I left home to pursue a better education from the time I was junior high age in Taiwan. Although I grew up in a Christian home, I was seeking for the reality and meaning of my life. In my high school years, I felt great pressure in my studies, which caused me to seek for God. One of my classmates brought me to the local church, I knew that for me this was the place I had been searching for, and I felt at home inwardly.

Although I tried to get away to find my own independence and freedom, I often ended up with sorrow and sadness at the end. I came to the United States to pursue my graduate degrees in 1993. I earned my Master's Degree from Washington State University and entered into the Ph. D. program at the University of Texas in Austin in 1995. During these years, I had traveled and moved to different states and countries. Whenever I moved, sadness and emptiness came to me at the end of my searching. It is like what a hymn says, “My wandering days grew increasingly empty, as I searched for the way, Just to fill the gap inside me, found my seeking vain.” The journey of romantic wandering eventually came to an end.

This feeling of emptiness caused me to turn to the Lord again and again. I realized that nothing is worth while and anyone or anything I tried to grasp is not secure. Each time, the great excitement passed and then the disappointment came. After many years of trying and searching, I knew that the Lord is my real satisfaction, who fulfills my needs and quenches my thirst. Right now, I enjoy the local church in Austin, which is my sweet home. In the past, I wandered to find my own interests and purposes in life but now I live for God's highest purpose on the earth. I don't want to wander any more and the church is my sweet home.
